Pool Fencing

Pool fences are not only a legal requirement in Victoria, but an opportunity to finish off your backyard oasis with a stylish piece!

Pool fencing refers to the protective barrier or enclosure specifically designed to surround a swimming pool or spa. Its primary purpose is to enhance safety by preventing unauthorised access, especially by young children, to reduce the risk of accidental drowning or injuries. Pool fencing is required by law in Victoria. Jamie’s Fencing currently offers Tubular Steel and Tubular Aluminium – we do not offer glass fencing nor organise permits or inspections.

Meeting your pool fencing needs

Here are some key features and considerations related to pool fencing:

  1. Height and Design: Pool fences are usually required to meet specific height requirements set by local regulations. In Victoria, the minimum height required is 1200mm (1.2m). The height is intended to prevent children from climbing or accessing the pool area unsupervised. The design of the fence should have no footholds or handholds that could facilitate climbing.

  2. Self-Closing and Self-Latching Gates: Pool fences typically incorporate self-closing and self-latching gates to ensure that the pool area remains secure even when the gate is used. In Victoria, the gate must automatically close and latch after being opened, minimising the risk of it being left open accidentally.

  3. Material: Pool fences can be made from various materials, and Jamie’s Fencing is proud to currently offer tubular steel and tubular aluminium. Each material has its own advantages in terms of durability, maintenance, aesthetics, and visibility.

  4. Clear Visibility: It is important for pool fences to provide clear visibility of the pool area. This allows caregivers or pool users to monitor activity in and around the pool, improving safety and reducing the risk of accidents.

  5. Compliance with Regulations: Victorian properties must install pool fencing for the following:

    • in-ground pools and spas.
    • above-ground pools and spas, including relocatable and inflatable pools that are capable of holding more than 300 mm (30 cm) depth of water and require assembly on site.
    • indoor pools and spas.
    • bathing and wading pools capable of containing more than 300 mm (30 cm) depth of water

  6. Maintenance: Regular maintenance is crucial for pool fences to ensure their ongoing effectiveness and safety. This may include inspecting the fence for damage, keeping the gate and latch mechanisms in good working order, and ensuring that vegetation or objects near the fence do not compromise its integrity.

It is important to note that pool fencing is just one aspect of pool safety. Other measures, such as pool covers, alarms, and adult supervision, should also be implemented to ensure a safe swimming environment.
