Top 5 Tips For Keeping Your Fence Looking New

Whether your fence is a statement piece or a simple boundary divider, keeping it in top shape can save you thousands and keep your neighbours happy!

In this blog, we will share 5 simple tips to keep your fence looking its best and standing up to the elements.

1. Power wash regularly

This one probably comes as no surprise but it is often overlooked as a simple way to ward off potential pests and to keep your fence looking its best.

Whether your fence is made of timber, metal, or PVC, a power wash will remove dirt, contaminants, and any debris that might attract pests. A power wash can even make tired timber look as new as the day it was installed.

We recommend a power wash once a year to maintain your fence and to keep the pressure between 1,500 to 2,000 psi – ensuring that the pressure is not too high. This is especially important for metal fences as too high pressure can damage the finish.

2. Seal holes and cracks in your timber fence

Aging timber fences will often develop cracks and/or holes. These crevices can be a breeding ground for mould spores and can promote rot – the last thing you need! We recommend cleaning the crevices with a gentle power wash before filling with epoxy or a weatherproof wood filler. Your local Bunnings will have all the products and resources you need and the results will see your fence standing longer!

3. Apply wax to your fence

Wax polish is known to be an all-rounder to protect your metal and timber fences from the elements whilst reducing fading. Regular car wax can be used on metal fences, whilst wood wax is recommended for timber fences. We highly recommend speaking to your local specialist at Bunnings for the best wax for your fence.

4. Trim bushes, trees, and remove weeds

The quickest way to damage your fence is to allow nature to take over!

Trim back any branches that might scrape or push on your fence. Remove or trim back any bushes that might push up against your fence – these bushes can cause discolouration and promote pests. Remove weeds around the base of your fence.

Keep an eye on the root growth of any nearby trees. Roots can do irreparable damage to your fence and see them topple over in a storm.

5. Prevent mould and mildew on PVC fencing

If you live in a damp climate, or your PVC fencing is mostly shaded, your fence might be prone to mould and mildew build-up. The easiest way to clean and prevent the mould and mildew from returning is to give it a thorough cleaning with a simple, homemade vinegar solution.

Using a bucket, mix 1 cup of vinegar with 5 litres of water and clean your fence with a clean cloth. For better results, you can add dish soap to the solution. The vinegar will kill the spores and prevent the mould from returning.
